We recently received an email from American Express stating that we may be part of a class action suit against the firm. We have received notices of class actions frequently with our many brokerage accounts (which often require hours of paper work to receive $3.57 while the attorneys receive millions), but what was unusual about this email is that the Class Counsel (the guys suing AmEx) have asked for the email addresses of all people who may be in the class.

This email gives us the opportunity to refuse doing so, but it is incumbent upon us to do anything. If we don’t respond by April 9, American Express will be required to provide counsel with our email and mailing address.

What is a little disconcerting, however, is that the letter does not mention the name of the attorney, or state what they plan to do with the information besides "Class Counsel may contact you by email or mail about this lawsuit." Will they keep our address after the case is settled? Will we now have an ambulance chaser calling us? We don’t know - there is no privacy notice.
